NTC vs Ncell vs SmartCell: Which SIM is Best for Data in Nepal 2026?
A no-nonsense comparison of Nepal's three main SIM providers for digital nomads — coverage, data speeds, prepaid packs, and which to buy first.
Nepal SIM Cards: NTC vs Ncell vs SmartCell
Nepal has three main mobile networks. Here is what each offers for a digital nomad who needs reliable data for remote work.
Ncell (Recommended for nomads)
Ncell is Nepal's largest private telecom and the most popular choice for travellers. It has the widest 4G LTE coverage in tourist areas including Thamel, Lakeside Pokhara, and Bandipur.
- Best data pack: 30-day 30 GB pack for ~NPR 800 (~$6)
- Speed: 10–40 Mbps in Kathmandu, 5–20 Mbps in Pokhara
- Available at: TIA airport on arrival, Ncell shops, local phone stores
NTC (Nepal Telecom)
The state-owned operator. Better coverage in rural areas and trekking routes (Annapurna Circuit, Everest Base Camp). Slower in cities but works where Ncell does not.
- Best data pack: 30-day 20 GB for ~NPR 700 (~$5)
- Speed: 5–15 Mbps in Kathmandu, good in hills
- Best for: trekking side trips outside the valley
SmartCell
A distant third with limited coverage. Not recommended for primary use, but available if Ncell/NTC are out of stock.
Our recommendation
Buy an Ncell SIM at the airport on arrival — the counter is just after baggage claim. Get a 30 GB monthly pack. If you plan to trek, also pick up an NTC SIM for backup coverage on the trail.
How to buy (as a foreigner)
- Passport required (original)
- One passport-size photo (bring from home or print at airport)
- Fill a simple registration form
- Cost: SIM card ~NPR 100 ($0.75), then top up with a data pack
