Visa & Immigration

Visa extension experience at Kathmandu immigration (March 2026)

Did my first visa extension yesterday at the Department of Immigration in Lazimpat. Thought I’d share the process for anyone planning to extend.

Time: Got there at 9:15 am, was done by 10:00. Queue was short.

Documents: Passport, one photo, hotel letter (I’m at a guesthouse in Thamel — they wrote a simple letter on letterhead), and $90 USD cash for 30 days extension ($3/day).

Process: Fill the form at the counter, submit, wait for your name to be called, get passport back with extension stamp. No agent needed.

Only hiccup: they didn’t accept a slightly creased photo, so had to run to a photo shop nearby. Bring a fresh one!
