Food in Kathmandu is one of the great joys of living here. Here's what to expect and where to eat as a digital nomad.

Dal bhat — the daily staple

Dal bhat (lentil soup + rice + vegetable curry + pickle) is the national meal, eaten twice a day by most Nepalis. At local restaurants, a full set costs $1.50–$3 and comes with unlimited refills. It's nutritious, filling, and usually freshly made. You could eat dal bhat every day and never get bored — every restaurant has their own version.

Street food and snacks

Momos (Tibetan-style dumplings, steamed or fried) are everywhere and cost $1.50–$2.50 for a plate of 10. Sel roti (ring-shaped rice bread), chow mein, samosas, and various fried snacks are available from street stalls at less than $1. Don't miss:

  • Chatamari — Newari rice crepe, sometimes called the Nepali pizza
  • Kwati — mixed bean soup, hearty and cheap
  • Yomari — sweet rice dumplings, seasonal

Café culture — where nomads work and eat

Kathmandu has a growing café scene with quality espresso, pastries, and laptop-friendly tables. Prices are higher than street food but still affordable: $2–$4 for a good coffee, $4–$8 for a Western-style brunch. Popular spots include Himalayan Java (reliable WiFi), Roadhouse Café, and Boudha cafes near the stupa.

International food

Thamel has Indian, Italian, Korean, Japanese, and Middle Eastern restaurants at reasonable prices ($6–$15 for a main). Quality varies, but the selection is better than you'd expect.

Monthly food budget

Eating mostly local (dal bhat, street food, occasional café): $100–$180/month. Mixing local with cafes and occasional international: $200–$350/month.
